What Is AI Mode

AI Mode is Google’s new search experience that uses large language models to answer questions directly in the search results. The study found AI Mode produces verbose, text-heavy responses that often cite sources differently than traditional ranking algorithms would. A page that ranks well in standard Google might never appear in the AI Mode results for the same query.

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “best coffee shop in [city],” AI Mode may already be showing its answer before traditional results appear. If your business information is not part of how these AI systems cite local businesses, you could be invisible to a growing segment of searchers.

Third, create content that answers common customer questions. AI Mode tends to pull from sources that comprehensively address what people are asking. Blog posts, FAQ pages, and service descriptions written in natural language have a better chance of being cited.

The Bigger Picture

This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to pay attention. Google is betting big on AI Mode as the future of search, and the data shows it is already behaving very differently from the algorithm you might have spent years optimizing for.
